Scott practices in the areas of intellectual property, complex commercial, regulatory and criminal matters. He has tried cases before judges and juries and handled appeals at all levels of the state and federal court systems. Scott has even presided over administrative trials involving cases under the City’s civil-rights ordinance for the Minneapolis Commission on Civil Rights. Scott’s clients have ranged from some of Minnesota’s largest publicly traded companies to children, journalists, protesters and homeless persons—all seeking fair representation in the legal system.

Scott has been teaching appellate advocacy at the University of St. Thomas Law School, mentoring young lawyers of color to make the legal community more reflective of Minnesota. Through his work at the Children’s Law Center, representing adults pro bono through the Federal Bar Association’s Pro Se Project and the Volunteer Lawyer’s Network, serving on the board of the ACLU in Minnesota, and as a board member and committee chair for St. Paul’s Hallie Q. Brown Community Center, Scott believes that judges cannot forget the community they serve nor can they lose the compassion and understanding of social problems. And our justice system, in turn, must always have the goal of helping people change their lives.
